History of the Tournament - posted: 11/28/2007

The Mount Royal Tip-Off Classic was formed in 1982 as the offspring of the old Royal-Hardy Classic, which was initiated in 1977. The Royal Tip-Off Classic was formed as a tribute to long time successful Mustang Basketball coach, Nick Patola. Nick is a person who believes that the most important objective of the Classic is to provide availability for participants and tournament volunteer workers to mingle and establish friendships.

At this time, in 1983, it was decided to incorporate both a girls' and boys' divisions to the tournament. For the first two years, the tournament consisited of four boys' and four girls' teams. It was also in 1983 that the tournament included a banquet and dance for its athletes.

In 1985, the tournament was expanded to sixteen teams (8 boys' and 8 girls'). This was also the first year we decided to go the way of obtaining major corporate sponsors.

The Mount Royal Tip-Off Classic expanded to 32 teams in 1997. E.D. Feehan High School joined Evan Hardy and Mount Royal as another host school from 1999 - 2002. In 2003, Marion Graham joined Evan Hardy and Mount Royal as a hosting facility.
