Basic FIBA Rule Difference From NCAA or NATL Federation

1. The wide key is used for the restricted area.

2. The ball is handled by the official(s) on all violations in the frontcourt or backcourt.

3. FIBA now plays alternate possession. The first period of the game shall begin with a jump ball. Each remaining period shall begin with an alternating possession throw-in by the team entitled to the next alternating possession.

4. A maximum of 5 players may occupy the free throw lanes during a free throw – two teammates and three opponents of the shooter. Only the opponents of the free throw shooter may occupy the first lane space. Players shall not occupy a lane space to which their team is not entitled. Any player not in a marked lane space must be behind the three-point line and free throw line extended. Players occupying lane spaces may enter the restricted area upon release of the free throw by the shooter; all others may enter the restricted area only after the ball has hit the rim.

5. A technical foul to a player/coach/bench results in two free throw plus possession at center court.

6. An unsportsmanlike foul (old intentional foul) to a player results in two free throws and possession of the ball. A second unsportsmanlike foul committed by a player shall be considered a disqualifying foul.

7. Substitutions:
Either team may substitute following a violation.

8. A team is allowed two timeouts in the first half and three in the second half and one in each overtime period. Time-outs are called by the coach through the scorer’s/timer table. Timeouts cannot be carried over from the first half to the second half, and the second half to any overtime periods. There is only a one-minute break after first and third quarters.

9. Ball returned to the backcourt: The exception is eliminated for an airborne player (non-jumper) who controls a jump tap at the center circle and lands in the backcourt. After a back over center violation, the throw-in shall be taken in the frontcourt. It is a violation on a throw-in to throw the ball from the frontcourt to the backcourt.

10. A coach shall be disqualified if he or she accumulates 3 technical fouls for unsportsmanlike conduct for the behavior of bench personnel. However, if a coach is assessed two unsportsmanlike technicals resulting from PERSONAL unsportsmanlike conduct, the coach shall be disqualified.

11. Only the head coach is allowed to remain standing while the game is being played. All others within the team bench area must remain seated. (Warning first, then Technical)

12. The clock is stopped after a successful basket during the last 2 minutes of play in the game or in the last minute any overtime period. (See Tip-Off overtime rule.) The team that has just been scored on can request a time-out or a substitution(s) providing the request is made prior to the ball becoming live again. (i.e. before the thrower-in has the ball at his disposal for a throw-in after the basket). If the team who has been scored upon requests a substitution, the team who has scored may also substitute (1 or 1, 2 for 2, etc.)

SHOT CLOCK: Once a team has control of the ball on the court, you have 30 seconds in which to put up a shot and have it hit the rim (the concept of rim as in NCAA and CIS Rules).

13. SHSAA (Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association) across the province is using the old 10 sec. – 30 sec. time guidelines.
